Creating and managing events

An Event is one occasion you are buying for. Keeping Christmas and a birthday in separate events is what stops one budget quietly swallowing the other.

Create an event

On Home, tap Event at the top of the screen and pick the occasion you are buying for. Christmas, birthdays, Valentine’s Day and the regional occasions are all there, and whatever is coming up soonest is listed first, so you are not scrolling past Christmas in July.

The template fills in the date for you. That matters most for the occasions that move: Mother’s Day and Father’s Day fall on different dates in different countries, and the template uses the right one for yours.

For anything the list does not cover, tap Something else and set your own name and date.

Name it after the person, not the date

If you are setting up a birthday, Grandma’s birthday is much easier to find in a list six months later than Birthday 14 March. Christmas is the exception, and the template already handles it by putting the year in the name.

Change an event later

Open the event and use Edit event details. The name, the date and the budget can all change at any point, including after you have started buying, and nothing you have already added is affected.

Archive an event once it is over

When the day has passed, the event’s card on Home shows an Archive button. You can also open the event, tap the ⋯ menu and choose Archive event. Archiving takes the event off Home without deleting anything. Before it does, it asks a few questions:

  1. The first screen shows how many people the event covered and, if it has gifts, how many of them were bought.
  2. Doing it again next year? Say yes and the app sets up next year’s event with the same people, and fills in its name and date. Occasions that move, like Mothering Sunday, get next year’s date rather than the same day. You can change the name and date before you carry on. If this year’s event has a budget, next year’s starts with the same one unless you switch its Budget off. If next year’s event is already on Home, this question is skipped and gifts can move straight to it.
  3. If some gifts haven’t reached your last status, you choose what happens to them. Each one is listed under its person, showing its status now and where it will end up: next year’s event, the person’s Saved for later list, or your last status. Gifts already at your last status aren’t listed, because nothing here changes them. All gifts sets every gift at once. When some were never bought and some were bought but never ticked off, it starts on Suggested: unbought gifts move to next year’s event (or to Saved for later if there isn’t one), and bought ones get your last status. The button beside a person’s name sets all of their gifts, and tapping a gift sets just that one.
  4. Ready to archive? recaps what will happen before anything changes.

Once it’s archived, a last screen confirms it and lets you open next year’s event or the one you just archived. Below that it lists occasions you could plan next: Birthday first, then the rest soonest first, leaving out any you already have an event coming up for. Archiving works offline too.

Note

Archiving is not deleting. Gifts you moved to next year’s event or to Saved for later are there now, and everything else stays in the archived event.

What you can change once it is archived

An archived event is a record of what happened, so some things are fixed until you unarchive it.

You can still:

  • change the event’s name, date and picture
  • edit a gift’s name, price, notes, link and photo
  • move a gift to an upcoming event or Saved for later, or delete it
  • arrange people into groups

You can’t add gifts or people to an archived event, or change a gift’s status. To do any of that, tap Event is archived at the top of the event and choose Unarchive event.

Find an archived event

Archived events on Home lists everything you have archived, once there is something in it. Open any of them to see what you bought and what you spent, which is the quickest way to check what you gave someone last year before you buy this year’s.

Next, add the people you are buying for or set a budget.
