Tracking gifts with statuses

A status is where a gift has got to. Every gift has exactly one, and changing it as you go is what turns a list of ideas into a list you can trust in December.

The three you start with

To Buy is anything you have not bought yet. Bought is paid for. Wrapped is ready to give.

These three cannot be renamed, recoloured or moved, because the rest of the app reads them. Your budget counts a gift as spent from Bought onwards. When you archive an event, it asks what to do with any gift that hasn’t reached your last status.

Change a gift’s status

Open the gift and tap the status you want from the row under Change status. That is the whole action, and it saves as you tap.

To see what is at a particular stage, tap that status under the gift count on Home. Gifts opens on the gifts for your upcoming events at that stage, and you can change the filters from there. Tap the count itself to see everything still to buy, which is the quickest way to check what is outstanding a week before Christmas.

Add your own

Three stages do not suit everyone. If you order most things online, a status between To Buy and Bought for things you have paid for but not received is genuinely useful.

Tap the gear at the top left of Home, or your initials if you have an account, then Gift statuses. Tap a plus button on the line beside your statuses: the one above or below the list adds a status at that end, and one between two statuses puts it there. Give it a name and it appears everywhere the built-in three do.

Where you put it decides what it means

This is the part worth getting right. A status placed before Bought counts as not yet purchased, so its gifts are still in your to-buy total, and archiving the event suggests moving them on rather than marking them done. A status placed at or after Bought counts as spent, and its gifts come off your remaining budget.

So an Ordered status belongs before Bought if you want to keep tracking it as outstanding, and after Bought if paying for it is what counts to you.

Important

Reordering a status later changes what it means. Moving Ordered past Bought will change your budget totals, because those gifts now count as money spent.

Rename, recolour or reorder

You can change your own statuses at any time. In Gift statuses, tap one to Rename it or Change colour, or use Reorder at the top of the screen to drag it somewhere else. Renaming one does not touch the gifts on it. The built-in three stay where they are, but you can still change their colour.

Delete a status

Delete & move gifts removes a status and asks where its gifts should go first, so nothing is lost. It tells you how many gifts will move before you confirm, and it cannot be undone.

Budgets explains how spending is worked out from all this.
