Setting up for the first time

GiftTracker keeps one list per occasion, so everything you are buying for a birthday sits apart from everything you are buying for Christmas. Setting up takes a couple of minutes, and you do not need an account to start.

Create your first event

An Event is the occasion you are buying for. The first thing GiftTracker asks is to Create your first event, and you do that by picking a template: Christmas, a birthday, Valentine’s Day and the regional occasions are all there with the date already filled in. Something else gives you a blank one to name yourself.

You can have as many events as you like, running at the same time.

Add the people you are buying for

Everyone on an event is a Recipient. Open the event and tap Add recipients. Type a name to create someone new, or pick a recipient you have added to another event, so you are not retyping the same names every December.

Nobody you add is notified, and none of this is shared. Your lists are yours.

Add some gifts

Open a recipient inside the event and add a Gift. Only the name is required. Price and Link are worth filling in anyway: the price is what makes budget tracking work, and the link saves you hunting for the same product page again in three weeks.

Gifts you are not ready to assign to anyone go to Saved for later, which is where ideas live until you know who they are for.

Track what you have bought

Every gift starts at To Buy. Change it to Bought when you have ordered it, and Wrapped once it is under the tree. If those three do not match how you shop, you can make your own statuses.

That is the whole loop. Everything else is a shortcut into it.

Finding your way around

  • Home shows what is coming up next and how many gifts are left to buy for it, split by status. Tap the count or a status to open Gifts, where you can filter every gift you have by event, person or status. Below that is a shortcut to your recipients.
  • Gift ideas, further down Home, are ideas you can save straight to a recipient. Tap Explore beside the heading for the full list. They show up in the countries we have ideas for.
  • The round button at the top left of Home opens your settings, your statuses and your account. It shows a gear until you create an account, and your initials after that.

Once you are set up, all of it works offline, and your changes sync when you are back on a connection. Creating a free account backs your lists up and lets you lock the app, which is worth doing before you have a Christmas list you would hate to lose.
