Start with the phone you use
If you are looking for a gift list app for Android or iPhone, the first check is simple: can you use it on the phone where you are likely to think of gift ideas and do your planning? A good list is less useful if it is only available when you are at a particular computer.
GiftTracker is available for iPhone and Android. The same planning idea matters on either: create an Event, add the people you are buying for, and keep their gifts in one place.
Look past a long feature list
There is no single best app for every kind of gift planning. A long list of features can sound impressive, but it is worth paying attention to the ones you will use when a birthday is approaching or a Christmas list is getting longer.
- Can you make separate lists for Christmas, birthdays and other occasions?
- Can you keep gifts connected to the person receiving them?
- Can you tell what is still To Buy and what is already Bought or Wrapped?
- Can you add a budget when spending is something you want to watch?
- Can you return to an older Event without confusing it with a current plan?
These are the details that make a list helpful after the first few entries. They matter more than a feature that looks good in a store description but does not fit how you plan.
A worked example
Imagine you are waiting outside school and remember that a relative collects vinyl records. You open the app on your phone, find their Recipient list and add the idea. Later, when you have time to shop, it is there with the rest of your plan.
If you buy a record, mark it Bought. If you have set a budget, check how the purchase sits alongside the other ideas. None of this has to take long. The benefit is that the information is in the same place when you need it again.
Check the everyday details
Before you settle on an app, try adding a short test list. Notice whether you can find it again, whether the labels make sense, and whether the app keeps planning comfortable on a small screen. If you are often without a connection, check what it can do offline after setup.
It is also sensible to understand how account and privacy settings work before storing a detailed list. GiftTracker’s guide to your account and data explains the options available in the app.
Choose a setup you can live with
The right app is not necessarily the one with the most features. It is the one you can open, understand and keep using through a busy season. Start with one Event and a few Recipients. If it helps you remember a good idea and see what you have already bought, it is doing the job.
